INTERNATIONAL WINE REPORT,

MARCH 2022

2020 Feral, 91 Points
EFESTE Sauvignon Blanc, Ancient Lakes

This papaya and tropical-driven Sauvignon Blanc from the Ancient Lakes AVA isn’t heavy on the pyrazines, which is more my style of wine. The nose is clean and vibrant, with notes of blanched almonds, tropical fruit, and Meyer lemon, with a hint of fresh herbs on the front palate.

2021 Evergreen, 90 Points
EFESTE Riesling, Ancient Lakes

A delicious, young Riesling that is perfumed with aromas of yellow apple, Bartlett pear, and a hint of tropical fruit. There is a subtle petrol aroma that brings some complexity to the wine. The acidity is pronounced alongside flavors of underripe pineapple and lime pith that leads to a lengthy, mouthwatering finish.

2020 Lola, 90 Points
EFESTE Chardonnay, Wahluke Slope

The first vintage of the Lola Chardonnay from the Conner Lee Vineyard produces aromas of honeydew melon, candied pear, honeysuckle blossoms, and blanched almonds. It is rich, oily, and round on the palate with medium acidity where green melon and ripe yellow nectarine take center stage. For a Washington Chardonnay, this is one of the better ones in the market.

2021 Oldfield Estate Rosé, 91 Points
EFESTE Rosé, Yakima Valley

A lovely pink copper color in the glass, the nose screams of kiwi, wild thimbleberry, and green apple Jolly Ranchers. It’s well balanced on the palate and brings yummy red raspberry and citrus flavors that delivers a long and mouthwatering finish.

2019 Ceidleigh, 93 Points
EFESTE Syrah, Red Mountain

The Ceidleigh Syrahs from Red Mountain have always been some of my favorites from Efeste. The explosive nose is almost Cabernet-like with blackberry and black plum aromas, followed by tobacco, mountain sage, wet earth, and freshly ground pepper. But the palate is pure rich Syrah from Red Mountain - it’s meaty, tannic, rich, and decadent with flavors of black olive and bacon fat. The acidity is bountiful, the mouthfeel is full - but this needs time to evolve because it’s very tight. Give it 2-3 years before popping it open and then enjoy a beautiful Washington Syrah over the next decade.

2019 Taylor Mag, 91 Points
EFESTE Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain

100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain displays deep ruby with an orange rim and brings ripe black cherry, blue plum, sugared blackberry, and roasted cinnamon stick to the nose. Flavors of dark fruits, mountain sage, mocha, and cedary herbs form the palate, Chalky tannins, high acidity, and a savory finish complete the wine. Needs another year in bottle to fully reach its potential.

MARCH 2022

Feral Sauvignon Blanc 92 PTS

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Feral was sourced from the Evergreen vineyard in the Ancient Lakes AVA. The mouthwatering acidity and smooth texture work brilliantly together, as green apple and green papaya tones mingle with stony undertones on the palate. Plump, juicy and ripe, this is quite simply a killer value.

2020 Penelope Roussanne 92 PTS

The 2020 Penelope is a 100% Roussanne wine that delivers plenty of marzipan and brioche tones alongside macadamia nuts and a silky texture in the mouth. A light dusting of salinity and beautiful verve add to the enjoyment here. Wait for the very long finish!

2019 Angie Blanc De Blancs 90 PTS

The 2019 Angie is the first sparkling wine crafted by EFESTÉ that is 100% Chardonnay from the Lake Chelan AVA. The wine delivers plenty of Gravenstein apple and citrus zest tones alongside racy acidity on the palate. Enjoy over the next several years.

2019 Estate Cabernet Franc 93 PTS

You won’t typically see Cabernet Franc in a Rhône-style bottle, but as long as the Cabernet Franc Estate continues to deliver this quality, there’s no need to change a thing. The 2019 edition offers soft tannins lining a bright core of red fruits alongside milk chocolate and red bell pepper underpinnings on the palate. With plenty of freshness and stuffing, this has at least another 10 years in front of it.

2019 Malbec 93 PTS

Inky in the glass, the intense 2019 Malbec James Vineyard revels in its rich cassis, blueberry pie and smoky flavors and finishes extremely long. It’s a little backward right now with its mineral-driven profile, but you can see some serious potential here. Give this a two-hour decant if consuming now.

2019 Estate Petit Verdot 93 PTS

EFESTÉ has been quietly producing some of the most outstanding Washington Petit Verdot bottlings over the past few years. The 2019 Petit Verdot Estate is soft and truly gorgeous with its rich core of dark fruits and mineral-driven tones plus chocolate and espresso bean. This is nervy and dense wine that has some serious cellaring potential. Give it a lot of air before enjoying.

2019 Big Papa Cabernet Sauvignon 93 PTS

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Big Papa is an outstanding new wine by Mark Fiore. Heady cassis and mocha tones combine with fresh sage and loamy soils on the palate. This finishes very long, providing just the right amount of viscosity and mouthwatering tension. Enjoy this beautiful wine over the next 15 years.

JULY 2021

2019 EFETE ‘Taylor Mag’ Cabernet Sauvignon - Crafted from the 191 block in the Taylor Mag Vineyard, this evokes dark currant and graphite aromatics with shades of brandy soaked black cherry. The palate is silky smooth with good flavor density and a beautiful core of dark fruits with chocolate and coffee ground flavors. With gratifying viscosity and length this beautiful wine by Mark Fiore will cellar well over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2021-2029- 92 pts

2020 EFESTE ‘Penelope’ Roussanne- The 2020 EFESTE ‘Penelope’ Roussanne is entirely sourced from the Gamache Vineyard. The texture and rich sense of mid-plate weight. This has a very Chateauneuf Blanc feel once on the mouth, unveiling kiwi, ripe honeydew melon and starfruit with cannoli undertones. Nutty and beeswax accents fill in with more air as the 2020 ‘Penelope’ has at least another seven years left. Drink 2021-2028- 92 pts

2019 EFESTE ’Estate’ Grenache- The ‘Angela’s Vineyard is adjacent to the Upchurch Vineyard as roughly two acres are planted here. Aged in concrete vessels which add texture this shows pretty red rose petal aromas and orange rind tones alongside a gorgeous core of guava, red cherry and strawberry. I admire the weight but also the striking finesse. The silky mouthfeel impresses as this offers generous red fruits alongside minerals and stony undertones. Drink 2021-2031- 93 pts

2019 EFESTE’James Vineyard’ Malbec- The ‘James Vineyard’ Malbec utilizes is third leaf vines, as this site is closely located to the ‘Stone Tree’ and ‘Weinbau’ Vineyards. The nose shows great bell pepper tones with menthol, dark cherry and blackberry compote on the nose. The palate shows good herbal undertones with fresh sage and mint, and a massive wall of black and blue fruits with Turkish coffee flavors. Drink 2021-2031- 92 pts

2018 Efeste "Taylor Mag" Cabernet Sauvignon - $35 - 91 Points

Only 720 cases of this delicious Cabernet were produced from Efeste's own estate vineyards in the heart of the famed Red Mountain AVA. Fermented with native yeasts, it's also very apparent it was unfined and unfiltered. While other vintages had small amounts of compatible varietals, this small production gem is 100% Cabernet, carefully crafted to be plush and rich but not over the top. The result is an elegant wine with a savory character with plum, blueberry, and baking spices. For a Red Mountain wine the tannins are surprisingly soft and integrated. Well made!
91 Points in the $35-$45 Category - The Wine Panel.

2018 Efeste “Ceidleigh” Syrah
$45 - 91 Points

This is big time Syrah! We enjoyed the abundant, very dark fruit flavors in this well-made gem, along with notes of black currant, dark chocolate, coffee and bacon fat with silky tannins for a long, polished finish. Sourced from Efeste’s own estate vineyard on Red Mountain, this big juicy Syrah from winemaker Mark Fiore does not disappoint! Another award worthy release of Ceidleigh.

APRIL 2021

2020 EFESTE ‘Evergreen’ Riesling- Roughly 8.3 G/L, this shows green apple, sweetened nectarine and shades of bergamot on the nose with wet stone undertones. The palate shows good finesse with wet stone, lemon/lime and a great sense of minerality. The texture here is outstanding. Drink 2021-2027- 91

2020 EFESTE ‘Adrienne’ Chenin Blanc- The ‘Adrienne’ was formerly sourced from the ‘Rothrock Vineyard’ and now is sourced from the Willard Farms Vineyard, which is old vine Chenin Blanc that is tucked in between apples and hops. The texture here is seriously great with layers of honeydew melon and kiwi, with orange blossom and wild mushroom undertones. This finishes very long. Gratifying to enjoy now, this has another seven years ahead of it. Drink 2021-2028- 92

2020 EFESTE ‘Oldfield Estate’ Rose- This vintage winemaker Mark Fiore has chosen not to add any Syrah, as this entirely Mourvedre and Grenache based. The nose shows very pretty high tones with red rose petals, orange peel, guava and shades of strawberry and damp earthy tones that all take shape in the glass. The palate is beautifully textured with a bright sense of tension. Layers of pretty red fruits march on with melon and serious length. Drink 2021-2026- 92

Deep medium ruby. Alluring scents of blackberry and spices, with added peppery lift from the stems. Sweet, savory and sedate, with its easygoing texture giving it considerable immediate appeal. The huckleberry fruit is accented on the back end by notes of pepper and licorice. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent sappy length. Plush, pliant Syrah with a lot of personality, made from ancient soils above the Missoula Flood plain. (vinified with about 15% whole clusters; aged in 17% new French oak; 3.89 pH; now mostly from the winery's Oldfield estate vineyard Syrah, planted close to Boushey vineyard at an altitude of about 1,400 feet)

2017 Ceidleigh 91+ pts
Bright ruby. A touch of musky reduction to the aromas of dark raspberry and black olive. Rich, plush, savory wine with black raspberry and dark chocolate flavors delivering palate-saturating richness and breadth without heaviness. Sweeter and more open-knit than a sample I tasted this past summer, showing more fruit complexity. Finishes with broad, dusty, firm tannins and lingering sweetness. (aged in 13% new oak; from Angela's vineyard on the northeastern tip of Red Mountain)

2017 Emmy 92 pts
Bright ruby-red. Lovely energy and lift to the aromas of blackberry, licorice, pepper and game. Then surprisingly supple and lush, with pliant, sweet flavors of dark berries, licorice and menthol given shape by sound black-peppery acidity. Firms up nicely on the back end, finishing with fine-grained black fruits and considerable suavity. This southern Rhône blend has the stuffing to age but it's also beautifully balanced for early drinking. (14.5% alcohol; aged in neutral oak; made from Stonetree Vineyard, which is now indicated only on the back label)

2017 Eleni 90+ pts
Bright ruby. Very pure, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, violet and lavender, with no oak in the way. Juicy, fine-grained and penetrating, even a bit youthfully imploded, showing moderate flesh to its flavors of black fruits, licorice, olive tapenade and black pepper, plus faint game and herb nuances. Not a fleshy style, this savory midweight reminded me of a traditionally made Saint-Joseph. (14.5% alcohol; 100% neutral oak; from Red Willow vineyard fruit)

WINE PRESS NORTHWEST, SEPTEMBER 2016

The 2012 Final Final is named a “Top Red Blend” and declared “Excellent” by the tasting panel.
As noted by Andy Perdue, “Even high-end wine collectors love a bargain, and that’s what we set out to look for when we asked Pacific Northwest wineries to send us their red wines that retail for $30 or less.”

EFESTE 2012 Final Final, Columbia Valley • $30 Winemaker Peter Devison leaned heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for this delicious blend from Woodinville. Aromas of mint, cherry and spicy oak lead to flavors of black raspberry, blueberry and dark chocolate. It’s all backed by firm tannins that balance all the fruit.

RAND SEALEY’S REVIEW OF WASHINGTON WINES, AUGUST 2016

19+/20 points , 2012 “Big Papa” Cabernet Sauvignon
Sourced from old blocks at the Klipsun, Bacchus, Red Willow and Kiona vineyards, this 100% Cabernet exhibits a deep ruby color and bold aromas of blackberry, old tree cherry, Damson plum, attar of rose, pipe tobacco, and incense. The flavors mirror the aromatics with full-bodied red and black fruits that are imbued with licorice, Swiss chocolate, Sumatra roast, and alluvial minerals. The saturation continues on the back with roasted berries and nuts, mocha, toffee, graphite, and fine-grained integrated oak (80% new French for 22 months), followed by a long, authoritative ripe tannin finish. If you like a bold, solid Cabernet, this is for you.

19/20 points, 2013 “Emmy
Brilliant crimson-ruby colored, this 88% Mourvèdre/12% Grenache blend possesses a seductive spiced, smoky nose of blackberry, pomegranate, cassis, crushed roses, garrigue, and incense. The flavors mirror the aromatics with black and blue fruits that are intermixed with cocoa, Sumatra roast, and Wahluke scorched earth. The back picks up macerated berries, roasted nuts, crème de cassis, and charcoal on the way to a lengthy ripe tannin finish.

19/20 points, 2013 “Jolie Bouche” Syrah
Deep crimson-colored, this Syrah emits intoxicating aromas of blackberry, mountain blueberry, black currants, garrigue (lavender and Provençal herbs), tobacco, and incense. On the palate, the black and blue flavors are mouth-encompassing, intermixed with licorice, cocoa powder, French roast and gravel, and loam minerals. The back reveals sensations of pressed berries, roasted walnuts, crème de cassis, kidskin, and charcoal, followed by a long, ripe chewy tannin finish.

STUFFED SUITCASE, OCTOBER 2016

In her post, “Seattle Girlfriends Getaway to the Eastside – Bellevue & Woodinville WA” Kim of Stuffed Suitcase describes her experience wine tasting at EFESTE during a visit to Woodinville Wine Country: “A family owned winery that showcases that family history all over the walls of their tasting room. I’ll admit that I was a bit thrown off that this tasting room was found in the industrial area of Woodinville, but when I realized they did that in order to be on site of their wine processing, it made sense. I loved chatting with Helen and Dan, the owners, during our tasting. They were amazingly gracious hosts with warm smiles, and a true passion for their wines.”

The aromas of embers, black pepper, dark fruit, herbs, smoke and spice are brooding and locked up on first pour, showing more on each swirl. The blue and black-fruit flavors are ripe, sweet and full, with savory notes fleshing out the crazy long finish.

92 points, 2013 Jolie Bouche Syrah
Aromas of iron, olive, herb, smoke, orange peel and savory notes are followed by a ripe, full savory palate that packs a punch. It’s far from shy but manages to keep it all in balance.

92 points, 2015 Oldfield Estate Rosé
This blend of Mourvèdre (78%) and Grenache is a very pretty pale peach color. Aged in a mixture of concrete, stainless steel and neutral French oak, it suggests aromas of citrus, strawberry, herb and spice. It tingles the palate with fresh, lively flavors, showing poise and presence with a citrus-filled finish that lingers.

91 points, 2013 Ceidleigh Syrah
Typically the most forward of the winery’s offerings, this wine brings aromas of blue fruit along with notes of fire pit, olive, mineral and cured meat that become more prominent over time. The blue and black-fruit flavors are dense and focused, with a firm backbone of tannins providing support. It needs time in the cellar to stretch its legs.

91 points, 2013 Emmy
The white-pepper, garrigue, raspberry, orange-peel and pot-roast aromas pop. The palate is action packed with raspberry and cranberry flavors that lead to a long, savory finish.

91 points Editor’s Choice, 2015 Feral Sauvignon Blanc
This thoroughly delicious, acid-driven wine opens with aromas of passion fruit, oyster shell, herbs, wet stone and citrus. The flavors are sleek yet generous with electric, mouthwatering acidity. It demands oysters alongside it.

91 points, 2014 Evergreen Riesling
The aromas of ripe peach, jasmine, honeysuckle and mineral pop. It drinks just off dry, with a spritz of stone-fruit and citrus flavors that extend on the finish.

90 points, 2014 Sauvage Sauvignon Blanc
Seeing just a kiss of new oak (20%), this wine offers brooding aromas of spice, white flowers, tropical fruit and citrus. The palate is full of white-grapefruit flavors backed by a zing of tart acidity, with barrel spice flavors lingering on the finish. It shows a lot of tension.

This offers a surprisingly savory look at this sun-drenched appellation, with aromas of smoke, mineral and Kalamata olives. The cherry flavors are full bodied with a palate-coating, slightly tacky feel that smooths out over time.
— S.S.

90 points, 2013 Feral Sauvignon Blanc
A lively offering practically screams out for oysters, this wine brings aromas of talc, flowers, and white and pink grapefruit. It’s fleshy in feel, with racy, puckering acidity that draws out the finish.
— S.S.

90 points, 2013 Sauvage Sauvignon Blanc
This warm-vintage wine is aromatically generous with notes of toast, lemon, citrus oil and guava. It’s light yet rich, with a plush feel and a tart finish.

WINE ENTHUSIAST
DECEMBER 2016

92 points/Cellar Selection, 2013 Big Papa Cabernet Sauvignon
This is the first vintage of this wine to include estate fruit, along with fruit from Klipsun, Bacchus and Red Willow. A complex medley of herb and spice aromas accented by purple flowers is followed by bold yet still refined dark-fruit flavors that linger on the finish. It has the tannin to go the distance.

91 points/Editors’ Choice, 2013 Nana Bordeaux Style Red
Merlot makes up half of this wine, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Cabernet Franc. It announces itself with nuanced aromas of herb, dried leaves and flowers, along with black currant. The flavors are palate coating and textured, showing depth but also restraint.

91 points, Final Final Red Wine
The aromas bring a big whack of pungent blue and purple fruit, along with notes of herb and cherry. The flavors are full and palate coating, bringing a real sense of texture and hedonism but still with great freshness.

90 points, Lola Chardonnay
The aromas of mineral, spice, toast, yellow apple, and lemon pith are light but enchanting. The palate is medium-bodied and refined, demonstrating judicious use of oak and a lengthy finish that shows some warmth.

“THE FINAL FINAL IS DECLARED EXTRAORDINARY AND THE ESTATE PETIT VERDOT PROCLAIMED OUTSTANDING. ”

— Washington Tasting Room Magazine, April 2017

VINO VOYAGER, NOVEMBER 2016

“EFESTĒ winemaker, Peter Devison, is producing beautifully handcrafted wines, using minimalist Old World winemaking techniques, to include native fermentation and limited oxygenation. His bold reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petit Verdot, are velvety, complex, and have lots of fruit-laced layers.” Excerpted from Wining About in Woodinville.

SIP NORTHWEST, SEPTEMBER 2016

A celebration of #roséallday includes EFESTĒ 2015 Rosé, Oldfield Estate, Yakima Valley. “The second estate release from this family-owned and-operated winery, the Oldfield Estate vineyard is planted strategically next to those of legendary vine master Dick Boushey, who also runs the site for the Woodinville, Washington, winery. Winemaker Peter Devison shows a deft, consistent hand in this release of 88 percent Mourvèdre and 22 percent Grenache, compelling many across the Northwest wine media to choose this as a perennial pick. Satisfying for Francophiles (dry, floral, citrus-driven) as well as fair-weather, seasonal rosé drinkers, minerality and grapefruit dominant the bouquet and the palate flushes out in wild berries, gracefully braiding acid into full fruit to finish with vivacity.”

SEATTLE REFINED, JUNE 2016

In the article, How One Grape Grower Inspired a Whole Industry, Paola Thomas interviews EFESTĒ’s winemaker, Peter Devison. He discusses working with grape grower Dick Boushey and the collaboration that takes place when obtaining fruit from Boushey Vineyards: ‘If something isn’t up to quality, he won’t put it in your bins, which is why we know that what shows up at the winery is exceptional. Having said that, I can’t remember ever walking his vineyards and debating whether we would be dropping anything – it’s always brilliant fruit!’
